Watling Road and The Common

During my regular trawl through old editions of the Kenilworth Weekly News, I came across this letter in the 16th February 1961 edition, recalling a stick of bombs that fell at Mill End:

Common_Bombs_17.2.61_edit_a          Common_Bombs_17.2.61_edit_b

Then, out of the blue almost exactly 50 years to the week after he wrote the letter, Mr Tuck got in touch to discuss this attack on Kenilworth; Mr Tuck's story will appear in due course.

The aircraft is remembered as heading northwards when it dropped its 'stick' with the gasworks and railway line, and sidings into the former fellmongers yard, the supposed targets. The first fell next to 11 Watling Road, probably at the rear. The second hit the railway embankment alongside the gas works, and 2 or perhaps 3 landed on the common; it is not known if others landed elsewhere. It was a night-time raid, possibly on 'Coventry Blitz' night.
